What is included in a solar permit set?

A residential solar permit set is normally eleven sheets: a cover sheet with the code summary and sheet index, a scaled site plan, a roof plan with fire setbacks and array layout, structural details and attachment specs, the one-line (single-line) electrical diagram, a three-line diagram where the AHJ asks for one, conductor and conduit schedules, an equipment schedule with model numbers, placards and labeling, the NEC 220.82 service load calculation, and the interconnection detail showing how the system ties to the main panel. Manufacturer datasheets are appended behind those sheets.

What is a one-line diagram in a solar permit set?

The one-line (or single-line) diagram is the sheet a plan checker opens first. It shows the whole electrical path as one line per circuit — array through the DC disconnect and rapid-shutdown device, into the inverter, through the AC disconnect to the main panel and the utility meter — with every conductor size, overcurrent device rating, and grounding conductor labelled. It is where NEC 690.7, 690.8, 690.12 and 705.12 are demonstrated, which is why an incomplete one-line is the most common reason a set is kicked back.

Why do solar permits get rejected?

The recurring causes are a busbar that fails the 705.12(B)(3)(2) 120% rule, conductor sizes that do not survive the 690.8 continuous-duty and temperature-correction math, missing or wrongly placed rapid-shutdown labelling under 690.12, fire setbacks that do not match the local amendment, a 220.82 load calc that omits the existing loads, and equipment model numbers on the plans that do not match the datasheets attached behind them. Almost all of these are visible on the one-line and the schedules before anything is submitted.

Do I need a three-line diagram as well as a one-line?

It depends on the jurisdiction and the system. Many residential AHJs accept a one-line for a straightforward string or micro-inverter system. A three-line is commonly required when there is a battery, a line-side tap, a multi-inverter or three-phase service, or when the utility's interconnection agreement asks for one. Check the AHJ's own checklist — that requirement is one of the most common local amendments.

Who has to stamp a residential solar permit set?

That is set locally. Many jurisdictions accept a set prepared by a licensed electrical contractor for a standard residential rooftop system; others require a professional engineer's stamp, and most require one once the array crosses a size threshold, involves a structural modification, or uses a line-side tap.
