Line-side taps and meter socket adapters

When the busbar cannot host your inverter and a service upgrade is unattractive, the supply side is the remaining option. It is legitimate and common — and it has more moving parts than the one-line suggests.

Why it works

705.12 governs a load-side connection: a back-fed breaker on a busbar. Its 120% arithmetic exists because the busbar is being fed from two ends.

A supply-side connection under 705.11 lands ahead of the service disconnect. The busbar is never back-fed, so the rule simply does not engage. It is the reason a 100 A service can host an inverter that no legal main breaker could accommodate on the load side.

Meter collars are worth understanding. The collar sits between the meter and its socket and provides a listed connection ahead of the service disconnect, so nobody is making a field tap inside the panel. Installation is quick and the result is tidy. The catch is that your utility must permit that specific product — approval lists vary considerably, and some utilities do not allow them at all.

Show the tap point relative to the service disconnect, the conductors and their protection, the disconnecting means with its rating, and the connector type by name. If you are using a collar, name the product and note the utility's acceptance.
