NEC Article 480 vs 706

Two articles, overlapping scope, and the distinction matters most for exactly the installations that are hardest to permit.

What each covers

Article 706 — Energy Storage Systems. Introduced in the 2017 NEC. It treats the system: the battery plus the charge control, the inverter, the disconnecting means, the commissioning and the signage. Listing (706.5), disconnects (706.15), and marking (706.7) all live here.

Article 480 — Stationary Standby Batteries. Older, and about the battery as a battery: cells and containers, racks and trays, terminal connections, insulation of live parts, working space, and ventilation of gases.

The practical rule: if it stores energy and can supply premises wiring, 706 applies. Whether 480 additionally applies depends on how much of the battery you assembled yourself.

The requirements people miss under 480

Why this bites field-assembled banks

A listed rack battery arrives with the 480-type questions answered inside its listing — the manufacturer resolved containment, connections and insulation, and UL evaluated it. Build the bank yourself and those questions come back to you, on top of 706.5's listing requirement, which a self-assembled pack does not satisfy in the first place.

That is the real reason DIY banks are hard to permit on a dwelling: not one rule, but a stack of them that a listing would otherwise have discharged. See 48V LiFePO4 and the NEC.

State which articles you designed against, alongside the code edition. Show the disconnecting means, the working space dimensions, the signage per 706.7, and the listing you are relying on. A reviewer who can see the basis moves quickly.

What is the difference between NEC Article 480 and Article 706?

706 covers energy storage systems — batteries plus the equipment that charges, controls and converts their energy. 480 covers stationary standby batteries as batteries, including cells, racks, connections and ventilation.

Does a Powerwall fall under 480 or 706?

A listed packaged ESS is evaluated under 706. Article 480 requirements are largely absorbed into the product's listing.

Does a field-assembled battery bank fall under 480?

Its battery portion does, and 706 still governs it as an energy storage system. That combination is one reason field-assembled banks are harder to permit.
