NFPA 855 residential ESS limits
Battery capacity is the constraint people meet after they have already chosen the equipment. Knowing the thresholds early changes where the bank goes, and sometimes what you buy.

Editions differ and jurisdictions amend, so treat these as the questions your reviewer will ask rather than a local answer.
The clarification that matters
The aggregate limit is per location, not per dwelling. The 2023 edition made this explicit. In practice that means a house is not capped at 80 kWh full stop — it is capped at 80 kWh in the garage, with further capacity possible in another permitted location subject to the same rules.
That is a genuine design option when a single bank exceeds the cap, and it is frequently missed because the limit gets quoted as a whole-house number.
Where a residential ESS may go
Generally permitted:
- Attached or detached garages
- Detached accessory structures
- Utility closets and storage/utility spaces
- Outdoors, including exterior walls
Generally not permitted:
- Sleeping rooms
- Habitable spaces adjoining them
- Anywhere blocking egress
What else comes with an ESS
Capacity is one of several requirements that arrive together:
- Listing. NEC 706.5 — UL 9540 for the system, UL 1973 for the battery. See UL 9540 and 9540A.
- Disconnecting means. 706.15, plus a readily accessible outdoor emergency shutdown for a dwelling ESS under the 2023 NEC.
- Signage. 706.7(D) wants nominal voltage, maximum available short-circuit current and arc-fault clearing time on the unit; 706.7(E) a placard at the service saying an ESS is on site and where.
- Working space. 110.26 — 36 in depth, 30 in width, 6 ft 6 in headroom, clear and not used for storage. Garage corners fail this routinely.
- Detection. Smoke or heat detection is commonly required in the space.
Practical sequence
1. Pick the location before the capacity. The location sets the cap. 2. Check the adopted edition with the AHJ — not the newest published one. 3. Confirm separation between units early; it drives wall length. 4. Dimension the working space on the site plan. It is the easiest thing to lose and the easiest to show.
